Preserving Heritage, Empowering Women
Overview
Across the Northeast, weaving is more than a skill—it is a way of life passed down through generations. Yet many women artisans continue to face challenges such as limited access to raw materials, markets, and sustainable income opportunities. Through its Yarn Banks and Handwoven Dupatta initiatives, Aseem Foundation is helping women transform traditional craftsmanship into economic empowerment while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Empowering Women Through Weaving – Sorbhog & Kamrup, Assam
In many parts of Assam, women possess exceptional weaving skills, yet economic opportunities often remain limited due to lack of market access, financial resources, and exposure. This often results in talented artisans remaining confined to subsistence incomes despite their abilities.
Aseem Foundation’s intervention in Sorbhog and Kamrup focuses on strengthening livelihoods through weaving-based enterprises, enabling women to convert traditional skills into sustainable sources of income.
The transformation is best reflected in the story of Kalpana Barman, who used the opportunities created through the initiative to build a successful livelihood and emerge as a proud Lakhpati Didi. Her journey serves as an inspiration for many other women, demonstrating how economic empowerment can lead to confidence, dignity, and a better future for entire families.
Yarn Banks at Tronglaobi & Jakhama
The regions of Tronglaobi, Manipur, and Jakhama, Nagaland have witnessed periods of social unrest and uncertainty that have affected livelihoods and economic growth. In such circumstances, empowering women through sustainable livelihood opportunities becomes critical for community resilience.
To address this, Aseem Foundation established Yarn Banks that provide women weavers with access to quality raw materials, reduce production costs, and strengthen local weaving ecosystems. Combined with market research, product development, and exposure to new opportunities, these Yarn Banks are helping artisans enhance the value of their traditional craft and reach wider markets.
By creating economic opportunities and building confidence among local women, the initiative is engaging a larger section of society in positive development and contributing towards long-term stability and empowerment in the region
The Flag Weavers of Manipur
The Flag Weavers of Manipur is a unique women-led brand established by Manipuri women who have risen above fear, conflict, and uncertainty to create something that symbolizes the unity of the nation itself.
Aseem Foundation has enabled these women to weave the Indian National Flag by hand—transforming traditional skills into livelihoods and hope into opportunity. Every flag carries a story of resilience, dignity, and patriotism, woven thread by thread by women who are shaping a stronger future for themselves and their communities.
