Bakeries in Border Regions
Empowering the Women Who Hold the Borders Together
Waadiyan Bakers – A Story of Courage from Mangnar
Located near the Line of Control in Poonch, Mangnar is a village where frequent cross-border firing and tensions often disrupt livelihoods and earning opportunities. Waadiyan Bakers helps local women transform the region’s walnuts into premium Caramelized Walnuts, creating greater value from local resources and generating sustainable livelihoods.
More than a livelihood initiative, Waadiyan Bakers represents resilience in the face of adversity. Every packet produced by these women is a testament to their determination to support their families, remain rooted to their homeland, and build a brighter future despite the challenges of living on the border.
Several of these bakeries have now been successfully handed over to local women groups, enabling them to independently carry forward the journey of empowerment and self-reliance.
